“Understanding Self- Harming Behaviors and How to Help our Children”. Self-injury is one of the most perplexing and challenging behaviors parents, caregivers, and educators may face. In 2018, it was estimated that approximately one in four teen girls deliberately self-injured by cutting themselves. The number of children and teens engaging in these behaviors is on the rise. Lauren Eckhart, Director of Clinical Services at Cedar Springs Hospital, will explain self-injury including possible causes, signs to look for, treatment approaches, and community resources.

Week 2 9/23/20 Printmaking

Materials:

-Acrylic paint (or ketchup and mustard)

-A surface to print on (a piece of cardboard, a sheet of paper, etc.)

-A paintbrush

-Water and a paper towel or rag for cleaning the paintbrush

-Leaves, a sponge, plus an object (or a few objects!) to experiment with


Week 3 9/30/20 Gesture Drawing

Materials:

-Body movements, poses

-Something to draw with (pencil, pen, crayons, etc.)

-A pad of paper or sheets of paper


Week 4 10/7/20 Stencils and T-Shirt Making

Materials:

-An old T-shirt (white or a light color works best)

-Cardstock paper or a cereal box/paperboard

-A piece of cardboard (can be another cereal box!)

-Scissors

-Pushpins

-A paint brush (1”-2" brush works best)

-Acrylic or latex paint (house paint works)

-Tape (masking tape or scotch tape)

-A little plastic tub for water and a paper towel or rag for cleaning the paintbrush

-Newspaper or a drop cloth or small tarp to protect the table/work surface


Week 5 10/14/20 Zine Making

Materials:

-At least 2 sheets of paper

-A stapler

-Scissors

-Materials for creating words and images (pencils, pens, crayons, glue and paper, etc.)

-Ideas for the subject of your zine
